The University of Oregon sponsors a variety of study abroad programs in Africa ranging from short-term faculty led programs to semester or year-long direct enrollment programs at African universities.

Students in all UO study abroad programs enroll in courses with subject codes that are unique to individual programs. Special course numbers are reserved for overseas study. Students may earn academic credit while gaining career-related work experience through internships in sub-Saharan Africa overseen by the GlobalWorks Internships program. Financial aid is available.

International Exchange

Students can enroll as an exchange student at a top international research institution for fall or winter semester, spring semester or quarter, a full academic year, or summer term. Exchange students experience an immersive study abroad experience, living and learning with local students in their chosen city.

Internship opportunities are highly customizable, and we guarantee placement in your preferred career fields and location. Students earn up to eight UO credits as well as life-changing work experience in a different culture.

Global Health and Service-Learning in Ghana

This program is ideal for students interested in studying global health and development issues in Africa.

In this program, you will take courses examining health and development in Ghana, as well as contemporary issues facing Ghanaian society. As a complement to your coursework, you will be placed in a hands-on service learning experience at a local community organization, healthcare service provider, or research institute.

Ghana to the World

Ghana to the World is a four-week summer program offered by the University of Ghana. During this program, you will be immersed in discussions on Africa-centered topics and experience the vibrant and diverse regions in Ghana. You will learn from local experts about the modern technologies, cultural foundations and evolution, and community systems shaping current initiatives for social impact and transformation in Ghana. As the capital of Ghana, Accra is well known for its traditional and contemporary arts, vibrant music scene, and bustling outdoor markets. Experience the welcoming hospitality of the Ghanaian people as you discover the wide variety of cultural events, festivals, and performances Accra has to offer.

GlobalWorks study abroad program in Tanzania

Social Justice and Human Rights in Tanzania

This immersive 5-week summer program offers University of Oregon students a transformative experience, exploring social justice, human rights, race, gender, ethnicity, and identity in Tanzania. Hosted at the Training Center for Development Cooperation (TCDC) in Arusha, students will earn 8 credits through academic courses and hands-on fieldwork.

Students will engage with local NGOs and other organizations on critical topics in global development, legal advocacy, and ethnic diversity. The curriculum examines race, gender, ethnicity, and identity, particularly within East African and diasporic contexts, deepening students' understanding of cultural diversity and shared global challenges.
