Can I request a waiver to cover the cost of the application fee?
The Department of Global Studies is able to extend a small number waivers to help international students cover the cost of the application fee. This is done on a first-come basis. To request a fee waiver, send an email to: GSLGradCoord@uoregon.edu

My GPA or GRE scores are not as strong as I would like. Should I still apply to your program?
We review applications holistically, with GPA scores just one piece of a larger assessment process. As indicated on the application site, GRE scores are optional and applicants may choose to submit a short writing sample in lieu of GRE scores. One of our most important criteria for admission is how well an applicant fits within our department’s intellectual community and aligns with department and faculty strengths. Make sure to emphasize how you see yourself fitting into the GLBL community in your application statement.

What are the required courses for the MA Degree?
Information on the academic program can be found on our website. There are 56 units required for the MA degree, but only three required courses. Students select elective courses from a range of options in the department and other departments across campus in order to curate their own professional concentration area of focus through the MA program.

How do I find a faculty advisor in the GLBL program?
Most MA students are assigned a GLBL faculty member at intake to serve as their “MA Advisor.” Students can change MA Advisors at any time and GLBL faculty are flexible and accommodating. Our desire as a faculty is to support our students’ academic and professional interests and aims. You can review a list of GLBL faculty and their research specializations here: https://cas.uoregon.edu/directory/global-studies-faculty

Does the department have funding available to support graduate students?
Most of our MA students are offered at least one full year of GE (Graduate Employee) support – GEs act as teaching and research assistants, have tuition waivers and fee subsidies, and are paid for part-time employment while pursuing their degrees. Additionally, many of our MA students successfully apply for department and campus fellowships, scholarships, and awards to fund their coursework, research, and professional development.
