Research Opportunities
A number of core ENVS faculty have labs that welcome undergraduates, such as Lucas Silva's Soil-Plant-Atmosphere Lab, Mark Carey's Glacier Lab, Lauren Hallett's Biology Lab, and David Sutherland's Oceans and Ice Lab.
Through ENVS 401 Research and ENVS 403 Thesis credits, faculty mentor undergraduates with research in these independent study classes. ENVS 401/ENVS 403 are required classes for departmental honors, though they can also be taken by students not intending to pursue honors.
Field-based courses like ENVS 410 Avian Conservation, ENVS 425 Environmental Education in Theory and Practice, ENVS 472 Environmental and Ecological Monitoring, ENVS 429 Environmental Leadership Program, ENVS 477 Soil Science, ENVS 493M Passive Cooling, ENVS 494M Passive Heating, and special topics courses allow students to examine issues within specific environmental and social contexts through field trips, to learn applied field methods, and to practice skills like collecting data, modeling energy use, or developing environmental education lesson plans.
In addition, our majors take courses from across campus, allowing them to take field courses in Biology, Earth Science, Geography, Planning, Public Policy, and Management, and more.
