Study Abroad in Ghana with GEO on the “Global Health, Development and Service-Learning in Accra” Program

Completing this study abroad program can help Global Health minors fulfill a variety of Global Health minor requirements, in addition to the Practical Experience requirement. Reach out to GEO about other health-focused study abroad opportunities they may have, too!


Complete a GlobalWorks internship with a health focus

GlobalWorks connects academic study with real-world experiences by providing undergraduate students with full-time internship opportunities in various career sectors. GlobalWorks works with local professionals worldwide so students can earn credits and life-changing work experience in a different culture.


Peer Wellness Advocate via UO Duck Nest

Global Health minors accepted and trained as a peer wellness facilitator can register for 4.00 units of individualized study credits to satisfy the Practical Experience requirement.


Oregon Public Health Corps

Global Health minors accepted and trained by the Oregon Public Health Corps can register for 4.00 units of individualized study credits with Dr. Jeff Measelle to satisfy the Practical Experience requirement. 


Global Health Mentored Research Program

All global health minors are eligible for a $1500 paid research experience, working closely with a UO faculty member. Students complete 120 hours of mentored research over 1-2 terms, contributing meaningfully to a research project aligned with their skills and abilities. Faculty mentors provide individualized mentorship, guidance, and research training, enabling undergraduate students to contribute to an aspect of the faculty member’s research. Students are required to present some aspect of their research at the 2026 Undergraduate Research Symposium. This experience automatically fulfills the Global Health Practicum requirement. 

Funding
  • $1500 student stipend
  • $500 in professional development funds for faculty mentor

Timeline

  • Apply by: Friday, Jan 30 at 5:00 pm
  • Decisions announced: Friday, Feb 6
  • Start date: As early as Monday, Feb 9
  • Complete 120 hours by: June 15, 2026
  • Present Research at the 2026 Undergraduate Research Symposium: May 7th, 2026

Application

  • 2-page single-spaced written statement describing your interest in global health (generally), this research program (specifically), and the proposed research role (explain the larger project and give some indication of your role/tasks)
  • Email from faculty mentor clearly stating they are willing to serve as your mentor during winter/spring term to complete 120 hours of research
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Compile all materials into a single PDF, send to graboyes@uoregon.edu with “Global Health Mentored Research Program” in the subject line

Volunteer with a Local Organization 

These are Eugene-based organizations with which we have existing partnerships. Reach out to them directly for a volunteer or internship experience. 

  • HIV Alliance: The group works to offer clients HIV-specific care and prevention services and reduce all barriers to wellness, including sexual health education, prevention and harm reduction services, and hepatitis C case management.
  • Mobility International, USA: This nonprofit works to advance disability rights worldwide by empowering people with disabilities to achieve their human rights through international exchange and international development.
