The European studies minor allows students to incorporate, within another major program, an increased international perspective in their work with a special focus on an understanding of Europe’s identity and role in the world. Students in any major may earn this minor as an enhancement to their degree program.
European Studies Program Mission
Students minoring in European studies take courses from faculty with many different areas of expertise, including history, geography, political science, business, and law. While the focus of the program is on 21st century Europe, the program emphasizes the historical and social factors that have created this contemporary situation.
With a history that dates to classical antiquity, there is a lot to consider about the great social experiment that has resulted in the current European Union.
‘The Widest Europe’
Consistent with our mission, “Europe” is here understood in the broadest conceptual and regional sense, including the variety of territories, cultures, and political units of the region Europe, as well as the several topical themes, constructs, and experiences of Europe, considered both historically and in contemporary settings.
The program seeks to elicit new interests and perspectives on Europe that is consistent with the individual student’s needs, career goals, and intellectual and personal pursuits. Individual advising by a European studies advisor is essential early in a student’s program planning.
