How Food Studies Enriches Your Education

As a graduating history major, I loved getting a minor in food studies. I’ve always been interested in food history, and this minor has helped me understand how our foodways are influenced by the past. Beyond that, I’ve learned more about environmentalism, agriculture, colonialism, anthropology, and more. The program’s interdisciplinary approach has allowed me to have a well-rounded, fun, and engaging courseload. I would recommend the food studies program to anyone interested in food, environmentalism, or simply learning more about how the world works.

My food studies minor also helped me create my unique thesis project, “Coffee and Culture in the Ottoman Empire.” The project is a digital exhibit that uses the past to help us understand ourselves and why we drink coffee.
