Economics Announces Graduate Student Awards

The annual Dale Underwood Outstanding Graduate Student Scholarship goes to Alexandre Pabst based on his performance on the June-July core exams. The award amount is $1,000. This scholarship was established through a gift by Chuck Goodman-Malamuth to honor Dale Underwood, a former undergraduate major in economics. Additional information:

An endowment in the name of Dale Underwood, a former undergraduate major in economics, funds an annual scholarship in the amount of $1000 for the graduate student who is deemed by the Department of Economics Core Committee to have the most outstanding performance on the first offering of the Core Exam.  The exact criterion used to select the student is at the discretion of the Core Committee, but will reflect student performance on both the micro and macro economics core exams and may also account for grades in the core theory and econometrics sequence.  Subject to grade and core exam performances yielding a qualified student, the award will be announced directly following the deliberation of the Core Examination committee determining who among the graduate students pass the first set of core examinations.  The award will be distributed to the winning student in recognition of their outstanding performance and with the intent of facilitating the student’s transition from foundational course work towards his or her graduate research program in the Department of Economics at the University of Oregon.

The Best First-Year Econometrics Performance award, as judged by performance in the three first-year PhD econometrics courses, will go to Jean Paul Leidenz Font.

The Best Field Paper, decided by the Graduate Awards Committee, will awarded to Ngan Tran for her paper, “Globalization and the Gender Wage Gap: Evidence from Vietnam.”

Each year the department likes to acknowledge the exemplary teaching support that our graduate students provide with the Graduate Teaching Award. Based on her cumulative teaching accomplishments and qualitative student feedback, this year's award goes to Emily Arnesen.

The award amount for each of the last three is $400.

Congratulations Emily, Jean Paul, Alexandre, and Ngan!
