Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies

INDIGENOUS, RACE, AND ETHNIC STUDIES; NATIVE AMERICAN AND INDIGENOUS STUDIES-Researchers from the University of Oregon (UO) have earned a $3 million grant from the federal government to help tackle global warming, while incorporating the insights of rural and Indigenous communities which are often left out of decisions about what happens around them. The grant will last five years and come from the National Science Foundation, (NSF) part of a tranche of $27 million for 12 projects that use the “rules of life”—the interactions between living systems of different sizes—to address societal problems.

ENGLISH, ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES, INDIGENOUS, RACE AND ETHNIC STUDIES, NATIVE AMERICAN AND INDIGENOUS STUDIES - “Indigenous Data Sovereignty Research Center,” will serve as a hub for transdisciplinary and collaborative research focused on transforming institutional practices and frameworks to honor tribal sovereignty through data justice.

ANTHROPOLOGY; HISTORY; INDIGENOUS, RACE & ETHNIC STUDIES; POLITICAL SCIENCE; WOMEN'S, GENDER & SEXUALITY STUDIES - The awardees hail from 13 disciplines and all career phases. College of Arts and Sciences faculty won 11 of the 15 awards.

INDIGENOUS, RACE & ETHNIC STUDIES - First-year assistant professor Lana Lopesi has been recognized with one of the highest honors bestowed by the New Zealand government.

INDIGENOUS, RACE & ETHNIC STUDIES - A changing climate, aging infrastructure and lack of sustained investment have resulted in stress on Oregon’s water systems, with communities of color disproportionately affected, according to a recent report by the Oregon Water Futures Project. The report’s lead author is Alaí Reyes-Santos, associate professor of Indigenous, race and ethnic studies at the UO.

ANTHROPOLOGY, INDIGENOUS, RACE, AND ETHNIC STUDIES, WOMEN'S, GENDER AND SEXUALITY STUDIES - Caribbean Women Healers is a University of Oregon digital humanities project featuring elders who currently live and work in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the US Pacific Northwest.

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art will livestream the premiere of “Sanctuary: A Performance,” an artist collaboration exploring the collective experience of women and queer people of color seeking refuge from persecution under the ongoing violence of colonization.
